Visual orientation in reading disability: diagnostic considerations.

چکیده
Reading disability (also called reading retardation) is defined as a significant reduction in reading ability relative to general intelligence. Some defintions arbitrarily specify that reading be a certain number of years or academic grades (usually two) below the individual's general intellectual capacity. Other definitions involve a certain percentage of reduction below average reading ability. However, these arbitrary figures have not found universal acceptance and, in practice, the crucial factor is that the child's reading ability is so impaired that he is unable to function adequately in school. Since reading ability is low in relation to general intelligence, the definition excludes most mentally retarded children.

متن کاملLetter Reversals in the Context of the Functional Coordination Deficit Model
Reading disability is introduced as a deficit in the coordination of functions involved in reading (Lachmann, 2001). Reversal errors, typically found in reading disabled children and extensively described by Orton (1925) are explained within this mulicausal approach. Data collected from normal and disabled readers in grades two through four suggests that reversal errors in reading are the resul...
متن کاملDoes a visual-orthographic deficit contribute to reading disability?
In this study, visual-orthographic skills were defined as the ability to recognize whether letters and numerals are correctly oriented. Aims were to investigate whether visual-orthographic skills would contribute independent variance to reading, and whether children with a visual-orthographic deficit would be more impaired readers than similar children without this deficit. Participants were 20...
